Program notes:
Dick Davis is a sexton for 3 Sioux City
cemeteries: Floyd, Logan, and Graceland.
Floyd is the oldest of the 3. It was
established in 1867 and contains 31.94 acres. It has 7700 markers
and 12,500 burials. The cemetery is subject to much vandalism.
Probably the most notable landmark is the bandstand. Notables
buried here are Brigadier General Elliot W. Perl from the Civil
War and Sgt. Edward B.
Spalding. Bodies are buried with the heads at
the west.
Logan was established in 1892 by a private
business and became a city cemetery in 1924. It contains 12,300
burials. There are 3 mausoleums, a city and county potters field,
a Baby Heart area only for babies, and a place originally
resricted to blacks. This is a hilly cemetery and bodies are
buried with the heads nearest the top of the slope. Ding Darling
and his family members and Tom Peterson are buried here.
Graceland is the largest of the 3 cemeteries.
It was established in 1908. It contains 88.9 acres, has 19100
markers and 25,700 burials. It has a nondenominational chapel.
The nuwble used in it is of the same kind as used for the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier. The chapel cost $32,800 to bad but it would
probably cost in excess of $Imiuion to build one like it now.
There is a public mausoleum and one owned by members of the Toy
Bank family. There is a potters field for indigent veterans.
Wilson Lewis, the first president of Morningside College is
buried in Graceland Cemetery.
There are 6 full-time workers at these
cemeteries. City hall would have the most records for
genealogists. Betty Fisher is the clerk for the city cemeteries.
There are other cemeteries in Sioux City,
also.

meeting in July but the location has not been selected yet.
A questionnaire was given to each member
present and they voted on what they thought that the focus of the
IGS library should be. It was also brought up that some members
