The Computer Genies of NW Iowa
3 February 1996
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met
February 3, 1996 in the NIPC0 building south of LeMars, beginning
at 1:30 p.m.
The newsletter was discussed with Janice
Danielson suggesting we might send fewer issues with more pages
to cut down on cost of mailing. Another possibility would be to
raise the dues. This will be discussed further in March.
Two computers were offered for sale, a Toshiba
laptop for $850 and a Gateway for $425.
Beware of Georgia-Pacific copy paper. Watch to
be sure it is 20#. Sam's Club computer paper is good, the edges
tear off easily. There are refillable liquid ink cartridges
available for Hewlett-Packard printers, costs much less than
buying new cartridges.
The December and January minutes were read and
approved. The treasurer reported a balance of $590.16--$66.00 in
the CD fund and $524.16 in the general fund.
A letter relieved from the IRS stated we have
been given a case number. The letter was dated Jan. 18 and it
takes 100 days to process the application for a tax free
(non-profit) number.
Larry asked that we let him know if we want
something on the meeting agenda.
The next meeting will be at the LDS library in
Spencer from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
Larry and Darrell were going to the last IGS
board meeting. Larry didn't make it but Darrell did. The CD-ROM
project Darrell started in September was dropped due to a
misunderstanding, but will be brought up again at the next
meeting. Counties have compiled lists of birth, death, etc. and
IGS prints them as a profit-sharing project between the county
and the state. A catalog lists these booklets. We can do this
with our data base. We can make Iowa births, Iowa deaths or any
state from our data base. Darrell will work with this if we want.
Last year we had over 4000 names. Stan now has redone and has
over 7000 names. This is from less than 1/3 of our members' GED
COMS.
Janice Danielson On magnets--they can be
shaped like computers and we need to order at least 250 at a cost
of 504 each. We are
thinking of selling them for $1.00 each. Rulers cost $1.00 and we
must order 250 of these, also. We decided to start with the
magnets and Darrell moved Janice order 250 magnets, seconded by
Kathy Fischer. Motion carried.
Darrell mentioned sweatshirts. They have a
computer and genie and our name for a $13-$16 range. He did not
have one to show yet.
Mary Storley announced the program for next
month at the LDS library from 8-12 a.m. The library will be
closed to the public.
Kathy Fischer showed a catalog from Century.
They now have archival photo albums and mounting supplies for
preserving photos. Janice Danielson moved the meeting adjourn,
seconded by Margaret McConkey. Meeting adjourned.
After a short break, it was suggested that in
order to have time for research at the library next month, that
we meet for dinner and have the meeting at that time. Mary
Storley will find a place.
Darrell Easton was in charge of the program.
He handed out sheets of information and introduced Dennis Hill,
the Technical Communications Manager at NIPCO, who assisted him
by demonstrating Internet. It was an informative and enjoyable
program.
The president instructed the secretary to send
a note of thanks to NIPCO for allowing us to meet in their
facilities and for Dennis Hill's help.

Computer Genies of NW Iowa
2 March 1996
The March 2, 1996 meeting of the Computer
Genies of NW Iowa was called to order by President Larry DuVal at Stub's Ranch Kitchen at Spencer, Iowa. Larry thanked
Mary Storley for making the arrangements for the dinner location
and for the use of the LDS Family History Center during the
morning hours. The secretary was instructed to send a thank you
note to the people at the LDS church. The minutes were read and
approved.
Stan Bastman reported on the format for the
index discs. It is MS Works Database. My Works Contains 3 major
programs: Word Processor, Spread Sheet and Database. There are
42,160 names entered at this time from about 1/3 of the members.
The treasurer's report was read by the
secretary in the absence of the treasurer, showing a balance of
$589.16 in the general fund and $66.00 in the CD-ROM fund. The
treasurer's report was accepted as read.
A discussion was held on the need for a
written policy on CD rentals. Janice Danielson owns most of the
CD's on the Computer Genie list and is naturally reluctant to
send her CD's out-of-state. Some ideas mentioned were a deposit
or payment for a CD with a refund upon its return, especially for
people from out of our area, and a time limit on rental. Stan
Bastman and Mary Storley were asked to jot down some ideas,
confer with Larry, and present them at the next meeting.
Larry told about his visit to the IGS library
in Des Moines. He showed a catalog of their sale items and told
about the slumber parties that are held at IGS , one in May and
one in October on a Saturday night from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Sunday. The cost per person in $10.00. Bring snacks to help with
the party. The library will also open on Sunday for a group.
Grace Hertz said she will bring back copies of the catalog when
she goes to the next board meeting if anyone wants one.
Larry had a letter fran IGS concerning vital
records and their future availability. We should contact our
legislature representatives about this. Contact our county
officials and urge them not to throw away the original records.
The next meeting probably will be at Buena
Vista County Genealogical Society library. Grace will have the
program on state census records.
Mary Storley said that the Iowa Lakes
Genealogical Society would like to get Dr. Schweitzer for a
program and would like to know if other groups would like to help
with costs. Grace Hertz moved that we help Iowa Lakes support
this. Marilyn Bastman seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Grace Hertz moved the meeting adjoin. Frank
Postma seconded, motion carried .
Grace briefly told of her Salt Lake City trip
in February. They worked 5 1/2 days with time out for the
weekend. The library is open from 7:30 a.m. until 10:00 pm.
except Sunday. It is a user friendly library. There is no fee.
Copies are 54,
microfilm copies are 204
and Computer printouts, 54.
Plan well ahead of time, do your homework and dress comfortably.
The best time to go is the Christmas holidays. Winter is good.
There are lots of books and computers She has a guide to research
at LDS. If anyone is interested she will let you borrow her copy
or you can order a guide of your own. The trip is tiring but FUN!

Computer Genies of NW Iowa
6 April 1996
The April 6 meeting of the Computer Genies
of NW Iowa met at the Buena Vista County Genealogical
Society library. The meeting was called to order by Pres. Larry DuVal. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer's
report, showing a balance of $609.16 in the General Fund and
$66.00 in the CD ROM Fund, was read by the secretary in the
absence of the
treasurer, and accepted.
Grace Hertz and Janice Danielson have been
carrying the financial load for publicity, notification cards,
postage, newsletter, etc. which has been a tremendous help to the
group while getting started. Janice moved we pay Grace Hertz her
bill of $182.40, Doris Dunn seconded, motion carried. Janice will
figure her bill before the next meeting.
Larry was asked for a 1997 budget for our
application for non-profit status. The estimated budget he
prepared is attached to these minutes.
A policy for CD rental was discussed. Larry is
checking on legal aspects of this with the legal counsel of a
genealogical software distributor. Tee man Larry talked to will
look into this and let him know, but before he will give Larry a
definite answer, a letter describing our clubs purpose and how we
plan to use the CD's must be sent to him. We also need to decide
on charges, length of rental period, handling charges, envelopes
(or packets) for mailing and how to handle overdue CD rentals.
Our current rental rate is $5.00. It was suggested we should use
the word "loan" rather than "rent". Janice
read from a copyright law which permits sharing of small
quantities of data with family members and friends, and if
applicable, with clients of your professional genealogical
service. The key thing to remember is, it is OK to use your
family archives CD to help someone else quickly fill in small
blanks in their family research, but, if they want to rely on
your CD for anything more than a name here or a date there, they
should buy their own copy to use. The key word is small.
Janice would like some help from others on the
newsletter articles. It is hard to come up with new ideas every
time. The group remarked that the last newsletter was very
interesting and informative. Janice needs any information for the
newsletters by Dec. 1, Mar. 1, June 1, and Sept. 1 for the Jan.,
Apr., July and Oct. issues. Larry had a letter from a lady in
Colorado wanting to exchange newsletters with her group. This
could be an idea for us with other groups, too.
Stan Bastman presented a bill for $31.72 for
postage for mailing 6 discs, for file folders and floppy discs.
Janice moved and Grace seconded the motion to pay Stan. Motion
carried.
Larry explained the estimated budget he had
prepared as mentioned above. Besides membership, additional
income could be from queries and sale items. In expenses, the
$100 for programs was inserted in case we need to pay for a
program sometime. Larry suggested we transfer $100 from the
General Fund to the CDROM fund to purchase more CD's for our
library and it would be a good idea to change the wording of CD
Rental to CD Loan in the budget.
Larry had contacted Everton's about the
possibility of having one of their genealogy workshops. The only
open date was September 7, which happens to be our regular
meeting date. Key will need seating room for at least 50 people
and at least 8 long tables. The program will last from 9 a.m.
until 4 p m. with 5 lectures given. The fee will be $24 which
includes a l-year subscription to the Genealogical Helper
magazine. Key will bring 5 computers, displays and items for
sale. Janice Danielson will look into getting the Golf Club
building in Storm Lake for this. We could possibly sell our
magnets and whatever else we have by then. Janice suggested we
could offer lunch for a price. This would save people going
elsewhere or bringing their own.
Larry handed out a price list from Broderbund.
We should let him know if there are any CD's we would like to
have the Computer Genies buy. These would be our loaners instead
of Janice's personal ones. Janice will order from Broderbund for
us at cost. This would be a big help to our budget and we would
be able to get more CD's for our money.
Another question brought forth is the amount
we should charge for queries we receive. No action taken.
Larry suggested making name tags for the
meetings and membership cards. He also expressed the possibility
of a Show and Tell at the end of each meeting, if you have
something interesting to share. Janice Danielson showed a card
for German genealogical research which can be purchased for $2
from the Sacramento Genealogical Society. she also showed
printouts of Lois McConkey's Family Tree Maker program.
Grace Hertz will be attending the National
Genealogical Society 1996 Conference at Nashville TN in May. She
offered to buy tapes for any individual who might like some.
The meeting adjourned.
Grace Hertz presented a most interesting
program on State Censuses.

DuVal opened the meeting. Guests ere introduced John Winterringer
introduced the program speaker, Janet Manning, who spoke on
Orphan Trains.
The meeting continued with the secretary's
report. There were three corrections to the minutes: Grace
Hertz's bill was rounded off to$185.00 instead of $182.40, the
word tape was corrected to CD, and the budget prepared was for 1996,
not 1997. The report was accepted as corrected. The
treasurer's report showed a balance of $675.16, $609.16 in the
general fund and $66 in the CD fund. The report was accepted.
The June meeting is to be in Cherokee with
Grace Hertz giving a program on organizing and carrying out a
on-location research trip.
Stan Bastman has completely reorganized the CD
library. The new total of surnames is 5760. He also Prepared
three ideas for the GED-COM Journal cover. The cover design Could
possibly be used for a letterhead, also.
Darrell Easton Commented on the CD loan
situation as discussed at last month's meeting. Another possible
solution could be that instead of charging a set rate for a loan,
we could have an open library and not charge, but take donations.
Darrell has a CD, "Marriage Index 1720-1850 for Arizonan
California, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas and
Oregon which he has given to the Computer Genies. He told about
some Ancestry publications and CD's available and various items
he has received in the mail. Darrell also brought us up to date
on the sweatshirts. He showed the design for them. We can have
any kind of design or lettering. The shirts come in six colors,
basically 2 sizes, for $15 each. Extra colors would be $1 more.
There is no price available for T-shirts at this time, but should
be less than sweatshirts. Darrell moved we order 12 sweatshirts
and sell them for $17 each in burgundy or blue design Color.
Special order (different color) would be $18. Motion seconded by
Kathy Fischer, motion carried. We will also order 12 T-shirts.
The September 7 meeting will be by Everton's
at the golf course in Storm Lake. The five most popular lectures
selected by our group at a previous meeting were Vital Records,
German Research, Preparing and Publishing a Family History,
Immigration Resources, and Major Genealogical Indexes.
Plastic name tag holders were discussed for
name tags at our meetings. Doris Dunn showed one with a swiveling
clip on the back as an example. Others (clip, pins, etc.) are
possible too.
John Winterringer announced that Paul Maddy
would be at the LeMars Public Library or. May 15 at 8:00 p.m. to
talk about tombstone restoration. The following Saturday, May 18,
Mr. Maddy will do actual restoration at a cemetery south of
LeMars fran 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. John also announced that a quilt
display from another museum in Iowa is at the Plymouth County
Museum at this time.
Doris Dunn commented on a bill that has been
signed for funds to care for pioneer cemeteries in Iowa. It was
also noted that each county has the capability to disperse their
own funds for this.
The most popular design was chosen for the
GED-COM Journal cover. Kathy moved we use the cover design chosen
by the group, seconded by Doris Dunn, motion carried.
The meeting adjourned.

Janice Danielson reported that the September meeting, the Everton's workshop, could be held at the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course, the rent would be $70 plus an extra $15 for the kitchen. We need a $100 deposit a week before the meeting. Everton's charge $24 for the workshop, $23 of that is for the Genealogical Helper subscription fort year. Darrell moved that on September 7 we will hold an Everton's workshop at the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course on Hwy 71 and will charge $25 registration fee. Coffee and bars will be provided by our members. Each person will provide their own lunch. We will advertise to surrounding genealogical societies and in magazines that matter. We could also bring lists of questions that could be taken to IGS the next weekend. We will meet at the LeMars Public Library.
Vicki and Karen Kesler from the Palo Alto Genealogical Society were at our meeting to talk about our sharing in the Dr. Schweitzer program they are planning. Would we be willing to share financially in the profit/loss of this project? It will cost approximately $1500 for fees, lodging and
travel expenses for Dr. Schweitzer. The Iowa Lakes Community College is available at no cost. The sponsors would share a 10% profit of Dr. Schweitzer's book sales which would be apportioned according to our share of the profit/loss. Stan Bastman moved we pledge $200 to help. Darrell seconded the motion, motion carried. The date could be April 12, 1997, depending on Dr. Schweitzer's schedule.
The meeting adjourned.
Grace Hertz presented the program, "On Location Research".

6 July 1996
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met
Saturday, July 6, 1996 at the Spencer Public Library, President
Larry DuVal presiding. The minutes were read and approved on a
motion by Stan Bastman, seconded by Grace Hertz, motion carried.
The treasurer's report was read by Larry in the absence of the
treasurer. The balance is $46 in the CD Rom fund and $376 in the
general fund.
Larry reported that the issue of the CD disk
loans has still not been resolved since he has yet to hear from
Broderbund.
Everton's is changing their workshop format
and might try it at our September 7 meeting. Instead of 5
lectures, they would use sessions of 45 minutes with short breaks
and would be able to cover more topics this way. They will bring
5 computers and their display items. Janice Danielson and Grace
Hertz are in charge of publicity. After same discussion about the
registration fee, Darrell Easton moved that we change the
pre-registration fee from $25, as voted on at the June meeting,
to $28 with reservations to be in by August 31, instead of August
15, and charge $30 at the door, instead of the previously agreed
upon $27, as long as there is no conflict with Everton's. Grace
seconded the motion, motion carried. The $24 Everton charge
includes a l-year subscription to the Genealogical Helper. If two
from a family attend, their two registration fees would pay for a
2-year subscription. Our members are asked to furnish bars,
cookies, crackers, etc. to be available during the day, with
coffee.
Grace Hertz was asked to send a card and a
plant from our club to Janice Danielson in sympathy in the loss
of her mother.
Darrell Easton had on a name tag showing a
clip-on holder which would cost 304-404 if we would want this type.
No action was taken.
Stan Bastman had some printouts with him of
the 5003 different surnames which are on computer disks. There
are 34,288 names in our library at this time. Stan requested
update disks from the members. The date for Dr. Schweitzer's
lectures has been set for April 19, 1997 at the Iowa Lakes
Community College in Emmetsburg.
Larry reported that IGS has 3 new videos
available to use for meetings. They rent for $5 for 3 weeks. The
new videos are Passenger Lists and Passports, Naturalization
Records and Federal Land Records and National Archives Maps. He
also had some copies of the program and registration forms for
the IGS annual meeting in October, if anyone would like one.
A new TV series on genealogy will be released
in January and be available for PBS stations to show. The series
consists of 10 shows on various genealogical topics.
Darrell presented a bill for T-shirts, $47.78.
The motion was made by Grace and seconded by Stan that the bill
be allowed. Motion carried.
The meeting adjourned by motion of Grace and
seconded by Darrell. Motion carried.
Darrell showed a bag which will carry just
about anything. This can be added to our list of for sale items,
with our logo on it. It would cost around $20. We should be able
to sell our items at the IGS conference.
Stan Bastman presented the program on Ged-Com
Files.

5 October 1996
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met
October 5, 1996 at 1:30 p.m. in the LeMars Public Library,
President Larry DuVal presiding.
Larry reported that 6 new members joined our
group at the Everton Workshop last month in Storm Lake.
Larry asked for E-Mail addresses of the
members.
The August minutes were read and approved.
Darrell Easton made the motion, seconded by Stan Bastman motion
carried.
The treasurer's report showed a previous
corrected balance of $545.65, NOT $545.95 as reported last month.
The current balance is $766.22--$720.22 in the general fund and
$46.00 in the CD ROM fund. A motion was made by Stan Bastman and
seconded by Dairell Easton that the treasurer's report be
accepted, motion carried.
Two letters were received from attendees of
the Everton Genealogical Workshop last month. In general then
were pleased with the workshop. hut remarked on the lack of air
conditioning and that the building was not handicap accessible.
Darrell Easton reviewed the 'for sale' items.
Librarian Stan Bastman reported that the
surname index contains just over 6000 surnames and he is always
looking for more. We all need to get our names to him. He has
answered 5 inquiries from Florida, California, Idaho, Iowa and
Maryland. Darrell has also answered queries.
Larry appointed a nominating committee
consisting of Darrell Easton, chr., Edith Staab and Marilyn
Bastman. They are to report at the November meeting. The auditing
committee appointed to meet with Kathy Fischer will be Frank
Postma and John Winterringer. The November meeting will be at
Meriden on the 2nd and we will meet at LeMars in December.
Darrell Easton spoke on membership. Some is
received through people sending inquiries and we would send back
a membership form, some through our advertisement in the Hawkeye
Heritage. We can be added to the list of special interest groups
in the IGS newsletter. this does not cost anything.
Darrell suggested that dues be raised to $10
for next year. When we started,
$5 was enough to get started, but with a quarterly newsletter
being published and mailed, postage for meeting notice cards,
etc., expenses add up. A lot of expenses were donated in the
beginning in order to get started. Anyone submitting a new Gedcom
disk will get one free and with the completion of a new
registration form, which will go to former, present and
prospective members, will be eligible for a drawing for a free
t-shirt as long as they pay a total of $10. Members who have paid
$5 for the remainder of 1996 and/or 1997 also can be included in
this drawing with an additional $5. You can be a member for $5,
but must give $10 total to be included in the drawing.
To be eligible for the drawing , dues must be
paid by January 1, 1997. A motion was made and seconded that dues
be raised to $10 beginning January 1, 1997 Motion carried.
Tom Willems presented a book to the group
entitled "Germanic Genealogy".
The meeting adjourned.
Darrell Easton presented the program on the
Internet.

2 November 1996
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met
at 1:30 p.m. in the Meriden Community Building on November 2,
1996. President Larry DuVal presided at the meeting.
Guests were welcomed. There were no minutes.
The treasurer reported a balance of
$308.82-$262.82 in the general fund and $46.00 in the CD ROM
fund. The report was accepted on a motion by Iris Hemmingson and
seconded by June Ames, motion carried.
Larry called Bill , a representative of Illann
co. concerning the shortage of magnets shipped to us. Bill called
the company in California who had shipped the magnets. They
realized they were short and there was a mix-up, so there was an
adjustment made of $16.25 for the missing magnets, $6.36 shipping
and $5.00 for phone Calls Larry had made.
We will have a notice in the IGS newsletter
about the Computer Genies of NW Iowa being a special
interest group. The ad in the Hawkeye Heritage needs to be
changed when the bill is paid for another year.
Larry mentioned that there is a need to review
our constitution and maybe there could be an executive meeting to
do this.
The nominating committee report was given by
Darrell Easton. All officers have agreed to remain in office
another year. The slate of officers includes: Larry DuVal, pres.,
Mary Storely, vice-pres., Pat Behrens, secy, Kathy Fischer,
treas., Stan Bastman, librarian. They were elected by an
unanimous ballot.
Darrell and Larry will try to contact past
members by mail to see if they would be interested in rejoining.
We need project ideas. Darrell is working on a
Web page, but we need more ideas. Our web page will be linked to
the North Central Computer group's page and also to IGS.
Stan said that he can make name tags on card
stock using the disc label design for this. He was appointed to
pick two colors and make the name tags.

Computer Genies of NW Iowa
7 December 1996
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met
on December 7, 1996 at the Pantry Cafe in LeMars at noon for a
Christmas dinner. After dinner, the regular meeting was held in
the LeMars Public Library at 1:30 p.m. with President Larry rival
presiding.
Guests were introduced and welcomed.
The October and November minutes were read and
approved.
Larry passed around a copy of our Web Page as
it appeared on his computer this morning and complimented Darrell
Easton for his work on this. Darrell also showed his copy of the
Computer Genies of NW Iowa home page. Our page is
connected to the North Central Iowa Genies and to Iowa
Genealogical Society's Web Pages.
The treasurer's report showed a balance of
$284.73--$46.00 in the CD-ROM Fund and $238.73 in the General
Fund. Motion made by Stan Oswald to accept the report,
seconded by Ethel Heidesch, motion carried.
John and Betty Winterringer and Ethel Heidesch
will give the program at the January meeting in LeMars on how to
research records in the LeMars Public Library.
Ideas are needed for club projects. Darrell
Easton got an idea from the NW Iowa Genealogy Society's
newsletter. Each member would, on a 3x5-inch index card, sign it
and list their family names being researched. This would be
published in our newsletter, helping Janice Danielson with items
to fill the pages in the newsletter. Darrell Easton moved we do
this, seconded by Stan Bastman, motion carried.
Stan Bastman is still waiting for new and
updated Ged-Com files from members.
Larry DuVal will be meeting with Kathy Fischer
to work on the 1997 budget. Suggestions are welcome.
Larry announced that he is on the IGS
nominating committee and that they will be looking for a new
secretary and a new registrar. The District 9 Regional
Representative is up for reappointment and Grace Hertz has said
she will continue as our rep. Larry asked for any suggestions on
names for the other two positions.
The PBS series on genealogy will begin January
4. It would be nice if each of us offered our appreciation to Dan
Miller of the PBS station based at Johnston, Iowa.
Janice Danielson would be appreciative of any
help on the newsletter or for someone to take it over. September
to January is a rough time for her In her business. Paula Hamburg
offered to help her.
Darrell presented three bills--$25.00 for Doug
Lilly for help on the home page, $50 for annual fee for the home
page and $54.00 for our ad in the Hawkeye Heritage. Beverly
Woolsey moved these bills be paid, seconded by Marilyn Bastman,
motion carried.
A letter was received from Vicki Kesler
concerning the upcoming lecture by Dr. George Schweitzer on April
19 at Emmetsburg. me fee is $15 before March 15, $20 after that
date. Dr. Schweitzer is highly recommended and is a very
interesting speaker.
A letter was received from Gretchen Leonard of
Mesa, Arizona. She was inquiring about CGNWIA. Stan Bastman will
take care of it.
Darrell Easton moved and Stan Bastman seconded
that the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
Darrell presented the program, a video on the
Internet, produced by the North Central Iowa Computer Genealogy
group.
