Computer Genies of NW Iowa
7 JAN 2006
The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the Le Mars Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Attendance: Janice Albert, Stan & Marilyn Bastman, Lorna Brandt, Ethel Heidesch, Iris Hemmingson, Lorene Letsche, Linda Mohning, Joretta Mohns, Clay Nemmers, Stan & Sally Oswald, Frank Postma, Mary Storley, John & Betty Winterringer.
Stan Bastman presented a program in recognition of the 12th anniversary of this organization, reviewing some historical moments through the written minutes and noting the names of charter members, several of whom were present today. There was some reminiscing about the computers back then; just a few actually used a computer. Those that did have a genealogy program used either Brother’s Keeper or PAF. An interesting comment was made by Frank that he had purchased a program called Family Tree Maker. Although now a very well-known program, even Darrell had not heard of it. As has always been the suggestion of this group to members, Darrell reminded them to be certain that any program they chose had GEDCOM capabilities.
Refreshments were provided by Stan & Sally Oswald, John & Betty Winterringer, and Joretta Mohns.
The meeting was called to order by President Linda Mohning. Everyone present was asked to give their name, where they are from, and name a challenging project they planned for 2006.
Linda shared a couple items of interest to the group. One was a program called Skype used for making free calls over the internet to anyone else who also has the program. She also passed around the program box for Front Page, a software program used to design your own web pages.
Minutes of the last meeting were read by Lorna Brandt and approved as read.
Treasurer Stan Bastman read the Treasurer’s Report. Total income $40.00, expenses $200.00, balance $214.42. A bill for $14.94 was presented by Stan Bastman for paper supplies, postage, and brochure copies. Moved by Iris Hemmingson and seconded by Janice Albert to pay the bill. Motion carried.
Frank Postma presented the Audit Report. All handling of monies for the organization were reported to be handled in good order. It was recommended that Darrell Easton’s name be removed as a signatory for the bank account, and that President Linda Mohning’s name be added as the only additional signatory in addition to Treasurer Stan Bastman.
Stan Oswald reported on his collection of obituaries. Stan has been collecting obituaries from the Sioux City Journal website since about November 1, 2002, and has close to 13,000 in the collection. He provided the group a listing of names of people age 98 or over when they died, which interestingly numbered 252 individuals during that time period.
Lorna Brandt passed out 2006 Program Books to all present. The listing of programs was developed with much help from Executive Commitee members Linda Mohning, Pat Behrens, and Stan Bastman, as well as Marilyn Bastman. Correction of location of the February meeting was noted to be at the Family Table rather than the library.
Stan Bastman passed out new Computer Genies brochures to each person present. If anyone would like more brochures to place in businesses, libraries, etc. to advertise our organization to others, please contact Stan.
Linda Mohning asked for volunteers to serve on the Bylaws Committee. If no new volunteers, those persons who have already had some discussions on the Bylaws are invited to continue to serve, including Linda, Pat Behrens, Lorna Brandt, Stan Oswald and Stan Bastman. She asked that the group meet after this meeting to set up a time to get together.
Linda also noted that vital records are scheduled to be closed to the public beginning next year.
Reminder was given to get dues paid for this year. Stan Bastman was asked to develop a budget for the year, and anyone wishing to volunteer to assist is asked to contact Stan. All members were asked to think of ways to increase the treasury and to serve the membership and others interested in genealogy. There was some discussion regarding the current procedure of selling Gedcom information and any concerns. Members were asked to give this some thought and communicate any concerns or ideas to officers or Bylaws Committee.
We were reminded also of the upcoming Schweitzer Conference to be held April 8 at Everly. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the conference is from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is $25 per person for advanced tickets, $30 at the door. This includes lunch. Stan Bastman sent out emails to all members with a listing of potential workshop sessions, and asked them to indicate which three workshops they were interested in for inclusion in the program. For those who had not responded by email, opportunity was given today for them to indicate their top 3 priorities on a list provided. These will be compiled by Stan and presented to the next meeting of the group planning the conference for input in deciding which workshops will be requested.
Discussion on the possibility of developing a genealogy handbook was tabled until a later date.
Marilyn Bastman read a letter of thanks from Glenda Easton thanking the club for the written tributes to Darrell and the memorial plaque placed at the Iowa Genealogical Society.
Stan Bastman moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Joretta Mohns. Meeting adjourned.
A noon meal was held at Lally’s Eastside Restaurant prior to the regular meeting, attended by Stan & Marilyn Bastman, Lorna Brandt, Linda Mohning, Clay Nemmers, Stan & Sally Oswald, Glendon & Darlene Peterson and son Eric, Frank Postma, and Mary Storley.
Respectfully submitted,
Lorna Brandt, Acting Secretary

Linda had assembled a list of possibilities in genealogical research in northwest Iowa. They were discussed with the three most needed, or helpful, being newspaper indexes, cemetery records and vital records copied. We should have a list of what is available in each county so we could know what is needed.

The next meeting will be at Le Mars May 6 with the program on Remsen’s Luxemburg Heritage.

The program and meeting were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Janice Danielson presented the program. She told of the progress Brigham Young University is doing on digitizing books and records for free researching on their website. They do about 10-15 books per day and should have about 28,000 finished by the end of the year. Janice also gave some other interesting tidbits concerning our search for our genealogy. She had a handout sheet of many websites to help in our genealogical research.
After a lunch furnished by Janice Danielson, Pat Behrens and Lorna Brandt, the meeting was called to order at 3:20 by President Linda Mohning. Each person in attendance gave their name, address, where their ancestors originated and how they came to America.
The minutes were read by the secretary and approved as read.
The treasurer reported a balance of $364.47. The Schweitzer conference returned a loss, but it was agreed that the value of his knowledge to the public outweighed the loss. The Computer Genies had given $200 toward expenses before the conference and we were paid back $138.10.
President Linda reminded us about the Pioneer Surname List. We are to send our ancestors names to be placed on our website with the following criteria: they must have a northwest Iowa connection and have been born over 100 years ago.
We still need lists of items to be put into a directory of genealogical information available in our counties. Sioux County has put together such a directory which is very complete and helpful. Such directories would be put on our webpage.
The CD of the Resthaven Cemetery at Le Mars is still missing.
The next meeting will be a noon potluck picnic at Floyd Park in Le Mars on September 2. The meeting will follow in the Le Mars Public Library with the program being on the Danish Museum at Elkhorn by Michele McNabb.

She presented ideas on how to pass down family heirlooms not included in a will. A video was shown and the people present brought items from home to show and discuss.
The meeting was called to order by President Linda Mohning at 3:00 p.m. Members answered roll call with their name, town, and who gave them help.

Pioneer surname lists are still needed. These names must be people who were born 100 or more years ago and have a northwest Iowa connection. Linda passed out her list as an example.
Another project that could be done by the membership is a directory showing where research can be done and what is available in each county. A volunteer is needed to head this project. An excellent directory that was compiled by Wilma Van de Berg for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society was shown to the group. This is a good example of what can be done.
Officers were reminded they need year-end reports for the annual meeting in January.
Election of officers will be held at the November meeting in Cherokee.
