3 NOV 2001

The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met at the Cherokee Public Library on November 3, 2001, with 14 in attendance.  President Darrell Easton brought the meeting to order at 1:35 p.m.  The secretary’s report for October was not available for reading and was tabled until the next meeting.  The October treasurer’s report was read and approved.  The balance is $640.23.

Members were reminded to check our website and note that Stan Bastman has entered the entire list of queries that have been submitted to the club for this year. Although Stan has responded to all queries, this gives us an idea of what names are being queried, as well as gives us the opportunity to respond further to those who are requesting information.  The queries are coded at the left side of the page and you may request from Stan the name and address of the person requesting information if you wish to further respond.  Names of the persons making inquiries are not included as part of the information on the website.

Darrell reported that the IGS building project has been voted down for now, due to the inability of the developer to come up with a bond or letter of credit.  He also noted the results of the election of officers at the IGS meeting.

Darrell reported that the microfilming portion of the Hinton newspaper project has been completed. The papers are still in Cedar Rapids and they are trying to find someone willing to pick up the papers and return them to this area in order to save a hefty fee for sending them via UPS.  The microfilm eventually will be available for use at the LeMars Public Library.

It was noted by Darrell that a correction should be made to the September meeting minutes.  In paragraph 7, regarding the appointment of members of the nominating committee, the name of Larry Brangwin should be deleted. Since Larry is a current officer, he cannot serve on the nominating committee.  Motion was made by Kathy Fischer and seconded by Stan Bastman to remove Larry’s name from the nominating committee. Motion carried.

Followup discussion was held regarding the Rest Haven Cemetery project. There were 642 records documented and photos taken of all stones. Larry Brangwin indicated that the City of LeMars may want a copy of the information.  Hopefully we can work with the City to obtain yearly updates on burials at Rest Haven for the future, to keep the records up to date.  There were some discrepancies between what was documented by our group and what was indicated on other records from the City.  It was felt that the project went well. Now we need to discuss what we want to do with the information – whether to put it on the Internet, or other ideas. Recommendations for future cemetery projects included revising the data input form, and trying to get assistance from other groups, such as genealogy groups, service organizations, etc., for future cemetery  projects, as there will be more work involved than our small group can handle.  A motion was made by Kathy Fischer, seconded by Larry Brangwin, that we make plans to do another cemetery next year.  But first we need to revise the form currently being used, to better follow the format of the data entry program, as well as establish some guidelines for data entry on the forms. Motion carried.  Tentative plans were made to walk the Pleasant View Cemetery in Sheridan Township, Cherokee County. This is a city cemetery located ½ mile west and ½ mile south of Meriden, on L51.  Plans are to begin the project on the first Saturday of April, starting at 9 a.m.  Will need to reserve the Community Center in Meriden for a meeting place and probably a potluck lunch.

Marilyn Bastman has completed data entry for the Rest Haven Cemetery, and now we need volunteers to proof the data.

There was discussion regarding the possibility of looking into a grant to acquire an area, sharing with other groups/societies, in the building owned by the Plymouth County Historical Society in LeMars to hold meetings, store club publications and CDs, etc. Objections included the cost of such a project, concerns regarding staffing the area, and the club’s objectives of providing meeting sites at various places around the NW Iowa area to encourage involvement of people from a wide area.

Election of officers was the final item on the agenda. No members of the nominating committee were present and there were no new names submitted to the President for candidates. There were no nominations from the floor. The present officers were voted by unanimous ballot to serve another year in office, Darrell Easton as President; Larry Brangwin, Vice President; Edith Staab, Secretary; Kathy Fischer, Treasurer; Stan Bastman, Librarian; Lorna Brandt, Newsletter Editor.

The next meeting will be December 1 with our annual Christmas dinner at Uncle Albert’s in LeMars at 12:30, followed by a regular meeting at the LeMars Public Library at 1:30.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded, and carried.

Refreshments were provided by Pat Behrens, Lorna Brandt, Sally Oswald, and Linda Wheeler.

Program:  Pat Ellerbroek gave a tour of the Cherokee Area Archives located in the lower level at the library and pointed out a large number of records that are available for use by the public. This area is staffed by volunteers Monday through Friday from 1:30-4:00 p.m. They also can be reached by e-mail at:  archives@ncn.net.

1 DEC 2001

The Computer Genies of NW Iowa met on December 1, 2001 at the Le Mars Public Library, following a noon Christmas lunch at Uncle Albert’s in Le Mars. Fifteen members were in attendance. President Darrell Easton brought the meeting to order at 1:55 p.m. The October and November minutes were read and approved as read. The treasurer’s report showed no activity for the month of November, thus the account balance remains at $640.23.  Motion to approve treasurer’s report was made by Stan Bastman and  seconded by Larry Brangwin. Motion carried.  Sample reports from the Rest Haven Cemetery project were distributed for review. Emma Ballinger suggested that if information is put on the internet, that dates not be included.

Stan Bastman presented further information on the MS Front Page software program that he briefly referred to at the last meeting. He was able to purchase the program at a lower cost, has taken classes on this, and determined this program would be very beneficial to the club in the ability to do a number of other things on our web page and make it look more professional. Stan submitted a bill for $160.37 which would include this software program plus some additional items (paper, etc.).  Emma Ballinger moved that the club purchase the software program. This was seconded by Clayton Nemmers.  Motion carried. Darrell also brought up the need to look at a software program called Adobe Acrobat which would be very helpful for use in conjunction with the cemetery program. It isn’t something we need immediately, but can be looking for a good buy.  After some discussion it was moved by Larry Brangwin and seconded by Mary Storley that Stan Bastman be given the okay to purchase the program when one can be obtained at a good price. They are in the neighborhood of $300 now. Motion carried.

Darrell read to the members a letter from IGS that was sent to all Commemorative Wall contributors.  The contribution sent to the IGS from the Computer Genies can be refunded or can be held in an account for use on another site. The IGS is continuing to work on locating a larger space for their library facilities.  It was moved by Emma Ballinger and seconded by Marilyn Bastman that we leave our contribution with the IGS at this time.  Motion carried.

As part of his duties as 1st Vice President at IGS effective Jan. 1, Darrell is working on plans for the IGS Conference for October 3-5, 2002 in Marshalltown. He requested of the group to consider providing some kind of donation such as cookies or napkins for a particular event of the conference.  Our club brochures advertising the Computer Genies of NW Iowa will be provided as part of the goodie bags given to attendees. An attendance of 200-250 is expected. After some discussion it was moved by Stan Bastman and seconded by Larry Brangwin that we provide good quality dinner napkins for the banquet and have the club name imprinted on the napkins. It was also suggested that at least 500 napkins be ordered, or 1000 if a good deal on pricing can be obtained.  Could possibly also provide smaller cocktail napkins.  Extra napkins could be used for our own club meetings. Motion carried. Darrell asked Larry Brangwin to head up a committee to investigate pricing on napkins with imprinting.  The membership agreed that the magnets we still have on hand could also be donated for the goodie bags.

Larry Brangwin announced that the January meeting will be held at the Le Mars Public Library, and asked for members help in getting meeting places scheduled for next year’s calendar. April, May, and June will be reserved for the cemetery project at Meriden.  Darrell appointed Stan Oswald, Pat Behrens, and Lorna Brandt to make arrangements for the cemetery project at Meriden, including lunch plans, etc.

Motion to adjourn was made by Larry and seconded by Emma. Meeting adjourned at 3:20 p.m.

Refreshments were provided by John Winteringer, Sally Oswald, and Lorna Brandt.
